What are the aims of the Arts Centre, and have these changed across time? Is it possible to create an institution for the whole community?

The Centre is Not Just the Building
Dr. Walter Eysselinck (Director of the Centre, 1960s) knew what he wanted; his vision for the Arts Centre set expectations that seemed just out of reach. That was over 50 years ago. I wonder what he’d say if he saw it now?
The (Never) Empty Space
Something was missing from campus, but what was it? Maybe there needed to be a building, sitting on the fringe of the university. A building that stands alone but invites you in. Maybe an Arts Centre.
All Attempts are Imperfect
A theatre on the first floor, what a curious creation. Is there a lift? If you could ask the Gardner Arts Centre, the answer would be no. But if you ask the Attenborough Centre, you get a resounding yes, in fact there are multiple lifts. But this isn’t just about a lift, is it? No, it’s about a much larger issue.
